SAME OLD 'SANDIWARA' WITHOUT OUTCOME: IGP says police will probe 1MDB report

SAME OLD 'SANDIWARA' WITHOUT OUTCOME: IGP says police will probe 1MDB report
The police will launch an investigation into the report filed by an Umno division leader regarding the debt-ridden 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and its board of directors.
In a text message to Malaysiakini, inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said the matter would be handled by the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID).
"Since a police report has been lodged, the commercial crime branch would investigate it and discuss the case with the Attorney-General's Chambers for directions," he added.
The police chief also did not rule out the possibility of the firm's directors being summoned for questioning to facilitate investigations.
Khalid was responding to Batu Kawan Umno division vice-chief Khairuddin Abu Hassan who filed the report in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon.
In his report, the Umno man cited a slew of issues which needed to be probed.
He also called on the police to grill 1MDB's directors and warned that he would file a report against Najib if no action was taken.
1MDB: Police report baseless
Khairuddin, known as a staunch supporter of former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, also plans to lodge a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
His police report ignited speculation that perhaps a move is being orchestrated within Umno to oust Najib.
Meanwhile, 1MDB described the report as baseless and welcomed any investigation into its affairs.
The troubled government backed investment fund has also been targeted by the opposition, with questions posed over its financial trail stretching from Putrajaya to the Cayman Islands.
It is alleged that, among others, 1MDB has accumulated debt of RM36 billion which is papered over by repeated revaluation of a piece of prime land - the former Sungai Besi Air Force base - handed to it at knock-down price by the government.
The fund also allegedly loaned RM7.2 billion to PetroSaudi for oil exploration but the money was parked in an account in tax haven Cayman Islands.
However, 1MDB has always maintained that all its deals were done above board. - M'kini
