Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli, who received a letter of demand from Datuk Seri Najib Razak last week over his statements defending petrol subsidies, has told the prime minister that he will vigorously fight any suit against him in court.
The PKR secretary-general said he had responded to the notice issued by Najib and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor through his counsel, N. Surendran.
"I am firm that my speech was made in public interest as it involves the policy of the nation," Rafizi said in a statement today.
"I now await Najib and Rosmah's summons and their further action," he added.
Legal firm Daim & Gamany, in their reply on behalf of Rafizi, said their client had confirmed making the statement but that it was not defamatory of Najib and Rosmah.
The letter sent today further stated that Rafizi's statement did not carry any hidden meaning or innuendo as was claimed.
"Our client is firm that the statement was justified and fair," the statement said.
It added that Rafizi as an MP was duty-bound to raise and explain such issues to the Malaysian public.
"As such, we are instructed to reject in its entirety the several demands made in your letter (of demand)," the statement said, adding that Rafizi would defend any suit in court.
On December 4, Rafizi received a legal notice from law firm Hafarizam Wan & Aisha Mubarak which handles legal matters involving Najib and Rosmah.
He became the second opposition leader to be caught in the prime minister’s dragnet for challenging Putrajaya’s policies.
Rafizi said he had received the letter of demand, something which he anticipated as fellow Pakatan colleague, Tony Pua, had also received a similar notice.
Rafizi made the alleged defamatory statement in a video titled "Kenapa kita pertahan subsidi minyak" (Why we defend petrol subsidies). The video is available on Rafizi's Facebook page.
"I am proud to receive a legal notice from the prime minister for defending the rights of the people to get petrol subsidy of at least 30 sen a litre given the scenario where the country's leadership is spending public money as they wish on projects that burden the people such as 1MBD," he had said.
Rafizi said he had stated his willingness to debate with any Umno leader in defending the need for petrol subsidies. He also mooted the idea for Najib to debate with opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on petrol subsidies as it was a hot topic.
"I believe that Datuk Seri Najib Razak will also use the courts and become a witness and give evidence on 1MDB, pension monies and other matters relating to his decision to cut subsidies."
Putrajaya removed subsidies for both RON95 petrol and diesel beginning December 1, and prices are now based on a managed float system.
