TELL NAJIB, DON'T JUST TALK! All must have right to choose religion - Paul Low
Freedom of religion is a fundamental human right which must apply to all, Minister in Prime Minister's office Paul Low said.
He said that while he cannot argue with those who believe conversion out of Islam is forbidden, all should be able to choose the religion they want to follow.
"I cannot argue with that school of thought (Islam), but they (the Muslims) themselves must look at what is the basis of their objection to the rights of an individual. They have to go back to their scripture.
"But on the basis of human rights itself, without taking into context of any religion, the right to choose is a basic human right.
"I cannot preach something which I don't believe in," he said, speaking to Malaysiakini today.
Elaborating on his remarks at the interfaith forum ‘Harmony in Diversity, a Human Rights Based Approach’ earlier today, he also stressed that he is speaking based on his personal beliefs.
However, he pointed, the choices must be made with discretion and not arbitrarily or to keep up with trends.
"When you choose something that is illegal, however, you'd run foul of the law, then you must take responsibility," he said to Malaysiakini when contacted today.
Can't force beliefs
He maintains that in order to choose wisely, the right information must be obtained.
“But still, even with that context, I do not have the right to force it (my beliefs) on anyone.
"It is the duty of having parents, teachers and even the government to provide the right sort of information," he asserted.
Low, a former Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) president, at the interfaith dialogue at Malaysian Institute of Integrity said there should be freedom to choose.
The panel discussion marked the first day of the 2014 United Nations Human Rights Week in Kuala Lumpur. -M'kini
