Umno has turned into a motley band of angry people

Muslim NGOs have driven Umno to become a senseless and directionless organisation.
zaid UMNO2KUALA LUMPUR: Zaid Ibrahim, said at the very outset in his latest blog posting that he was no Chinese apologist.
However, he also said that he would be failing in his duty as a Malay, a Muslim and a former Umno member if he did not point out that “ISMA, Ibrahim Ali and their Umno sponsors have succeeded in changing the once proud and great Malay political party into a senseless and directionless organisation”.
“It’s sad to see the party, whose leaders once had vision and substance, transform into a motley band of angry men and women engaging in senseless attacks on the Chinese community in Malaysia,” said Zaid. “It has been a sad but defining moment for many Malays watching the awful performances of the delegates at the Umno General Assembly.”
“We have always thought that, by their nature and religious upbringing, Malays are generally mild-mannered, moderate in their views and reasonable in their ways.”
That image, lamented Zaid, has been destroyed by Umno.
Zaid disclosed that a good friend asked him, after his last posting, why he had become an apologist for the Chinese.
“I don’t think that’s a fair comment. I am not anyone’s apologist,” said Zaid. “In my life I have had good and bad experiences with all types of people, some of whom have been Chinese.”
“I do not see ethnicity as the defining character of any person. I see people as people. Some are good and some are bad. It’s as simple as that.”
If Umno leaders and delegates make ridiculous and dangerous allegations against the Chinese, “then I feel compelled to speak up”, explained Zaid.
Zaid turned in his blog to some of the speeches delivered at the just-concluded Umno General Assembly.
He said Umno Deputy President Muhyiddin Yassin’s attack on the private sector for not employing Malays in sufficient numbers or giving them a raw deal, “does not hold water”.
“We hear this attack on the private sector at every Assembly,” pointed out Zaid. “If the allegations are true, what has the government done about it?”
“Are they unwilling to enact anti-discrimination laws when they themselves discriminate against the Chinese in the public sector?”
Zaid referred to a “loony suggestion” during the meet that the Chinese did not know how to speak Bahasa, suggesting “these people” were “unpatriotic”.
“The Chinese do know Bahasa. Even in Chinese schools they have Bahasa classes. In public universities they have to be good at Bahasa if they want to succeed,” said Zaid. “The Chinese certainly know the language. They just choose not to use it. The question should be: why not?”
Zaid blamed it on segregation – Muslim, non-Muslim, halal, haram and obsession with Syariah-compliance – resulting in people finding themselves in little groups all over the country, speaking in their own languages and dialects.
“Umno leaders don’t have the ability to follow this argument, but others surely can,” said Zaid. “It is to the latter that I address this problem, because it is only the latter that can provide the solution.”
There is no hope in going to Umno for this, he warned.
