Putrajaya is mulling revoking sex blogger Alvin Tan’s passport for allegedly condemning the Sultan of Selangor for stripping Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of his state award and touching on a few other sensitive issues in the country.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that the Immigration Department has the power to revoke Tan's passport as the document was not an individual’s property.
"We can do it today or Monday. We can do it as soon as possible," he said at a press conference at Forestry Institute of Malaysia this morning.
Alvin Tan, the blogger who had run afoul of authorities in both Malaysia and Singapore, fled about three months ago to the United States, where he intended to seek political asylum.
Tan, 26, and his former partner, Vivian Lee, 25, are facing criminal charges under Malaysia's Sedition Act as well as the Film Censorship Act for their controversial online uploads, including a photograph on Facebook which was deemed to be insulting to Islam.
