Agbimuddin Kiram, leader of Sulu attack on Lahad Datu, dies

Agbimuddin Kiram (pic), the man who led 200 Sulu militants into Lahad Datu, died yesterday of cardiac arrest in his hometown in the Philippines.
Rappler, a news website in the Philippines, confirmed from three different sources that the Sabah standoff leader died at his home at Barangay Tubig Indangan in the town of Simunul in Tawi-Tawi.
Agbimuddin led a group of about 200 armed followers of the Sulu sultanate to Lahad Datu to revive the sultanate's claim to Malaysia’s easternmost state in February 2013. The group called themselves the Royal Sultanate Forces.
Jamalul died of multiple organ failure in October 2013 at the Philippine Heart Centre.
The intrusion led to a standoff between the sultan’s followers and Malaysian authorities, leading to the death of 52 Filipinos and 8 Malaysian policemen, and forcing over 6,000 Filipinos to flee Sabah.
Agbimuddin's whereabouts prior to his death had been undetermined. After the standoff ended, Putrajaya said he escaped to the Philippines from Lahad Datu, but this was denied by the Sulu sultanate.
Thirty accused, consisting of 27 Filipinos and three local residents, are being tried for terrorism-related charges.
Since the incident, Putrajaya has worked to tighten the state's eastern borders.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak formed the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) in March 2013 to beef up security from Kudat to Tawau.
But, Esscom failed to stop a series of kidnappings on the islands off the coast of Sabah, drawing criticism from the ruling coalition Barisan Nasional and the opposition, Pakatan Rakyat.
This led Najib to restructure the security unit which came into effect July 15, 2014.
