ANOTHER WASTED YEAR FROM NAJIB: 2015 - getting better or worse?

ANOTHER WASTED YEAR FROM NAJIB: 2015 - getting better or worse?
We sent off 2014 in the midst of disasters, and ushered in a new year that is full of crises. I am pretty sure many in this country will feel the same, whether this year is going to be yet another year full of problems.
Air disasters one after another, plummeting oil prices, suffocating inflation, massive floods in east coast and new year countdown stampede in Shanghai... The woes and concerns have been carried across the chronological divide into the new year, dampening the prevailing mood.
There have been signs pointing to the fact that the new year is not going to be one without any trouble. International oil prices once fell to $48.47 per barrel, the lowest since April 2009. As a consequence, global equity markets tumbled, our Bursa Malaysia not spared.
To make things worse, prices of commodities such as palm oil and rubber remained depressed over the past one year.
Religious and racist extremism is thriving and all of a sudden, we find our country a transit hub for potential IS militants. In the meantime, our own Perkasa and Isma continue to play up sensational religious and racial issues.
Surrounded by so many unpleasant issues, little wonder many have lost their hopes for the new year.
To be honest, anything that exists in this world has its own reasons for existence. We need to look at this from two different angles.
As a wise man said: Anything that exists in this world must have the objective factors and rationale for its existence. This also means if these factors are no longer present, anything that exists will eventually be ruined.
So, on the brighter side, where there is crisis, there is hope as well. And hope always exists side by side with crisis. The question is whether we are still pursuing our hopes or have already given up hopes.
When the country is experiencing an economic downturn or dilemma, it is time for the leadership to tackle the challenges and demonstrate real leadership skills. This is also the time for the people to display their courage and reject giving up hope.
A responsible and farsighted leader must aptly introduce policies and measures as well as bold reforms that will steer the country out of the current doldrums.
The leaders must act boldly and discard anything that should not have existed such as nepotism, uniculturalism and extremism.
Individuals and political parties holding very different views must set aside their differences and prejudices to support reforms and policies that will benefit the nation and her people.
Sure enough our leaders should take a retrospective look at what took place over the past one year, whether they had been excessively tolerant towards corruption and extremist discourse. Did they see the problems or did they simply opt to ignore them?
Every country has its own problems. The thing is: our leaders and all others who care for this country, must do their best to solve these problems, tackling them at the root.
If we choose to continue grumbling, if our government remains indecisive in implementing its policies, if we treat everything with a cold shoulder, and if the society continues to be clouded in pessimism, there is no way we can expect better days for 2015. - Mysinchew
