They also urged Putrajaya to deploy the maximum number of military personnel to help clean up its town centre after the floods wiped out electricity and water supply systems.
In a grim warning, MPs Anthony Loke Siew Fook (Seremban, pic) and Liew Chin Tong (Kluang) said that social unrest was a possibility in Kuala Krai as food and cash were in short supply.
“Cash is on the thin already for many who are not well-off and the flood wiped out disposable income for many.
“What concerns us is that very few shops are opened for business and even with cash, food stuff is not easy to come by,” said Liew and Loke who were in Kelantan recently.
Loke, who is the party’s head of flood relief operations, had gone to Kelantan with Liew to deliver donations of basic necessities to flood victims.
Kuala Krai district is perhaps the worse hit area in Kelantan where floodwaters are said to have even submerged the ground and first floor classrooms of schools that had been turned into shelters.
Single storey shops and buildings close to Kuala Krai town, which lies next to the river, were totally submerged.
A report two days ago in Bahasa Malaysia daily Berita Harian showed how Kuala Krai flood victims who went back to their homes found that the structures had been stripped bare to their foundations.
Loke and Liew also wrote about how most people in Kuala Krai had survived without electricity and clean water for 10 days.
“Garbage is mostly not collected and flooded areas have not yet been cleaned. Stench of dead animals is commonplace.
“We were in Kuala Krai to deliver private donations of necessities. But on site in Kuala Krai, we were made keenly aware that there are limits to private charity.”
Putrajaya has pledged to rebuild many of the homes destroyed in the district and to resettle some of the victims away from river areas.
In their statement, the two DAP MPs made a list of demands to Putrajaya.
These include that Tenaga Nasional Berhad announce a timetable to reconnect electricity supply and to deploy 10,000 military personnel from all camps in Kelantan.
The soldiers could be used to distribute food everyone in the district and help clean up the town centre as quickly as possible, they said.
“The presence of the military and increased police presence can restore public order for businesses to operate again,” they said.
“The twin crises of health and supply in Kuala Krai cannot wait.”
