State police chief Zamri Yahya said a 50-year-old man, believed to be a drug trafficker, and his Thai girlfriend, in her late 20′s were arrested at about 8am yesterday.
“Following their arrest, police found four pistols – a .22 Astra Unctay CIA, SA Guernica revolver, a Lic. Excl. Walther Mod. PP CAL 7.65mm automatic pistol and two Baretta automatic pistols,” he told a news conference.
He said the police team also seized a pistol silencer, 85 9mm Luger bullets, 9mm Thai Arms bullets and 22mm bullets.
Zamri said also seized were RM32,000 and syabu worth RM24,000, and a Toyota Estima that had a false plate number.
He said the man, who was also believed to be leasing out firearms to criminals, was found to have been arrested before under the Emergency Ordinance, while his girlfriend had no previous criminal record.
With their arrest, Kedah police believe they have crippled a drug-trafficking and firearms leasing syndicate.
Zamry said the couple was being remanded from January 7 until January 12 for investigations under Section 7 of the Firearms Act 1971 and Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
He said police were also looking for a man by the name of Tan Kooi Tiew (730402-02-5257) with address, No.9, Pekan Tunjang, near here, to assist in the investigation.
Members of the public with information on this man could call the investigating officer, DSP Mohd Naim Hasmawi at 019-5728884 or the nearest police station, he added.
In another development, Zamri said police seized two homemade firearms on January 6 and 7 during “Op Cantas Khas” in Sungai Tiang, Pendang and Kupang, Baling.
He said a 50-year-old rubber tapper was arrested on January 6 at about 5.30am and police seized a homemade gun and more than 80 bullets from him.
In the second case, police arrested a man, aged 30, believed to be a drug addict, at 7.30am yesterday after he was also found with a homemade gun.
Both men are being remanded for further investigation.
