Hardship allowance for more teachers in Sabah

Number of schools in Sabah has been re-evaluated from 38 to 107.

SANDAKAN: Teachers in 107 schools in remote areas in Sabah are now eligible for the special hardship allowance following re-evaluation this month.

Sabah Teachers’ Union president Suhaimi Othman said the number had increased from only 38 schools last year based on the list that was evaluated in 2007.

He said the special allowance enabled teachers in the P3 category at primary and secondary schools to receive RM1,500 monthly.

“I am confident the increase (in the number of eligible schools) will enhance the spirit of teachers serving in the islands and rural areas as well as ease the hardship they faced,” Suhaimi, who is also Kinabatangan district education officer told Bernama here today.

According to the re-evaluation, 372 schools in Sabah and Sarawak are eligible for the special allowance.

He also said the union sympathised with their colleagues affected by the floods, especially in the East Coast of the peninsula and urged teachers in the state to contribute to the Edcuation Ministry’s aid fund via the Sabah Education Department.
