'Never have I seen such a massive flood'- IPOH victims caught unawares
IPOH - It was a normal rainy day in Kampung Teluk Sareh, about 40km from here, and resident Jamakiah Ahmad Sebaini was preparing for her prayers as the sun set.
For the 56-year-old housewife, the rain that day was no different from the normal showers that the village receives at the end of every year.
Little did she know that her house, sitting very close to the Perak River, would be hit by an extraordinary rainfall phenomenon that had been forecast to deluge the nation.
Jamakiah was among the 1,005 flood victims who were evacuated to the Universiti Teknologi Mara Training Centre in Kampung Gajah, near here.
"The water from the river rose drastically and overflowed into residential areas. We did not even have time to move our belongings to safety," she told theSun when met at the evacuation centre.
Another resident, Salmah Ahmad, 63, said the flood this year was the worst she had ever experienced.
"I lived there all my life and never have I seen such a massive flood," she said.
Both Jamakiah and Salmah have been staying in the evacuation centre since the last two weeks.
"We cannot go home as the authorities have not given us the green light," Salmah said.
Talib Alang Ibrahim, 80, a resident from Kampung Gajah, said: "I was sleeping when I was awakened by my family members raising an alarm over the rising water.
When I stood up, the water level was up to my knee and half an hour later, it reached my waist."
He said the family abandoned the house immediately and sought refuge at an evacuation centre, before being forced to move to another centre due to the water rising to a dangerous level at the first centre.
"I have been sick for days. There is only so much medical treatment they can offer here," he said sadly.
Talib has been staying at the evacuation centre for 10 days, along with his mentally-challenged daughter and six other family members. - Sundaily
