RoS okay with meeting Kumar, but not as MIC sec-gen

The Registrar of Societies (RoS) has no objection to meeting Datuk G. Kumar Aaman, who is on a hunger strike at its office grounds, but not in his capacity as MIC secretary-general, said ROS director-general Mohammad Razin Abdullah.
"Since there is still a controversy over the position of the MIC central committee which is not settled, the RoS cannot recognise him (Kumar Aaman) as a member of the Central Working Committee (CWC) who has been appointed as the new secretary-general," it said in a statement today.
Kumar Aaman started his hunger strike at about 2pm yesterday to protest against the RoS's instruction, received on Monday, that his position as MIC secretary-general was invalid.
MIC deputy president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam yesterday also described Kumar Aaman's hunger strike as not part of Malaysian culture.

Barisan Nasional (BN) secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said meeting the RoS was a better way to resolve the MIC controversy than going on a hunger strike.
The RoS on December 5 declared the elections of three vice-presidents and 23 CWC members of MIC during the party's general assembly in November 2013 as invalid and proposed that re-elections be held within 90 days.
On the allegation that there were discrepancies committed by the RoS investigation officer, Mohammad Razin said the allegation was baseless.
He said the investigation conducted was transparent, in line with the requirements of the Societies Act 1966, and was based on facts and information obtained from all relevant parties, including the Elections Committee which was responsible for conducting the party elections.
Commenting on the MIC crisis, Deputy Education Minister II P. Kamalanathan said it was better to have re-elections than to continue challenging the RoS.
Kamalanathan, who is also a CWC member, said he was convinced that the RoS's decision for the party to hold re-election was based on thorough investigation which should be respected by all.
"This matter is actually simple and to me, the faster it is resolved, the better... I myself have read the letter from the RoS and I am convinced they would not make such an important decision without thoroughly investigating the matter for almost a year.
"I hope the party president (Datuk Seri G. Palanivel) and deputy president (Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam) will meet soon to resolve this matter," he said when met at the launch of the Malaysian Indian Education Roadshow in Putrajaya today. – Bernama
