Step down if you STILL CANNOT CLEAR yourself - PKR tells Zahid over FBI-Phua letter

Step down if you STILL CANNOT CLEAR yourself - PKR tells Zahid over FBI-Phua letter
Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi should resign if he is going to continue being silent on the controversy surrounding the support letter he penned for an alleged gambling kingpin who was arrested by FBI in the United States, PKR said today.
Ahmad Zahid has not answered questions regarding his relationship with Paul Phua, a high-roller who was arrested in Las Vegas late last year. He is facing charges of running a massive illegal online betting operation in Vegas during last year's World Cup finals in Brazil.
Malaysiakini revealed yesterday that Phua, 50, was actually a convicted criminal who was arrested in Miri, Sarawak in 2004.
Ahmad Zahid had in his letter claimed that Phua  had assisted in national security matters.
However he has refused to reveal more, claiming secrecy under the Official Secrets Act (OSA).
"Zahid's refusal to be forthcoming to the people in this issue is increasingly damaging his credibility. He should be more proactive on the questions that are being raised," PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil said in a statement today.
"If he does not want to do so, I suggest he resigns," he added.
He also asked that previous home ministers explain if they had written similar letters during their tenure.
The police has denied that Phua ever assisted the country in national security matters.
Phua is currently out on bail in Nevada, United States, together with his son, Darren.  M'kini
