Who’s lying? Zahid, Shafee or police?

PKR tells Cabinet to direct Zahid to publicly come clean on the issue of his letter to the FBI.

PETALING JAYA: PKR has demanded that the Federal Cabinet direct Home Minister Zahid Hamidi to come clean with the public on the issue of his letter to the US Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding alleged gangster and gambling kingpin Paul Phua Wei-seng.

The Cabinet has its weekly meeting today.

In a press statement released late yesterday, PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil referred to a Malaysiakin report that quoted unnamed police sources as contradicting Zahid’s assertion in the letter that Phua was not a member of the 14K triad.

Last Saturday, Umno lawyer Shafee Abdullah, defending Zahid’s letter, said that he had “never heard of the 14K triad” in his 40 years as a lawyer. But acccording to an FBI document submitted to the Las Vegas court trying Phua, Malaysian police had identified Phua as a 14K member.

“If Malaysiakini’s sources are credible,” said Fahmi, “this affair is shocking and weighs heavily” against Zahid and Shafee.

“The time has come for Dato Seri Zahid Hamidi to openly address the various issues arising from his secret support letter so that further speculation can be avoided,” he said.

“I also hope Dato Seri Najib and the Cabinet will ensure that Dato Seri Zahid comes up with a clear explanation of the issue.

“At the same time, Tan Sri Shafee Abdullah must be questioned as to why his story is different from that of the police. Who is telling the truth in this matter?”
