ALREADY CALLED 'SICK MAN' OF ASEAN, yet Putrajaya wants to be regional benchmark for Internet

ALREADY CALLED 'SICK MAN' OF ASEAN, yet Putrajaya wants to be regional benchmark for Internet
GEORGE TOWN - Malaysia is still behind Thailand when it comes to Internet services provided by telcos, says Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek
However, the ministry, he said, was looking to address the matter, in particular when it came to price and speed, the latter which he described as “tortoise pace”.
The Kemaman lawmaker said while Malaysia was ahead of Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia, he did not want to keep comparing itself with the same countries.
Instead, Malaysia should measure itself against the likes of the United States, Europe, Japan and Korea and strive to be better than them.
“We want to see Malaysia become the benchmark for Asean countries in terms of price structure and services compared with other countries, such as Thailand and Indonesia.”
Ahmad Shabery told reporters this after delivering his keynote address at a women’s empowerment workshop in Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) here.
He added his ministry via the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) was still in discussions with telcos to reduce their current service charges.
Ahmad Shabery said the cost of installing fibre optic lines had dropped so telcos could look into reducing their service charges while improving their service.
When asked when the ministry planned to meet service providers, Ahmad Shabery said it would be “anytime soon”.
He added the government was looking into ways to optimise Internet usage at a fair price. - http://www.therakyatpost.com/
