BUT MUHYIDDIN DOING THE OPPOSITE! Use education, let kids mix freely to bridge racial gap - forum
KUALA LUMPUR -Education should be used to combat rampant racism in Malaysia, with emphasis given to the national language to bridge the racial gap.
A forum titled, “Symposium to Eliminate Racism and Racial Discrimination in Malaysia”, was jointly organised by several non-governmental organisations (NGO) today.
Centre for Policy Initiatives head Dr Lim Teck Ghee said racism was a social, cultural and political construct.
“Children should be encouraged to have contact with children from other ethnic groups to bridge the gap between communities from young.”
Dr Lim stressed the importance of the young being taught that modern societies were pluralistic and also the religious sensitivities of others.
He explained that currently the tension that Malaysia faced was between the Malays and Muslims, as well as non-Malays and non-Muslims.
This, former Law Minister Datuk Seri Zaid Ibrahim, another panellist, said had led Malaysians to be disjointed, without the people even trying.
“It has a corrosive effect on us. The elites, who wish to remain in power, want to keep us this way.”
However, the former Umno and PKR politician said a practical unity factor for Malaysians was in the national language itself which should help bridge the gap between the various ethnicity groups.
“The Indonesians are united because they have a nationalistic sense. You can’t tell a Chinese Indonesian apart from an Indonesian as the way they speak the language is the same.”
Zaid also called on Malaysians to support and select political leaders who championed all ethnicity groups and to reject racial discrimination.
The former Kota Baru lawmaker said the people should reject political affiliations through race and Malaysians should abandon the feeling of “your group can protect you sentiment”.
Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) adviser Dr Kua Kia Soong called for an Equality Act with “concrete and specific policies”.
Dr Kua, who launched his book Racism and Racial Discrimination in Malaysia, said racial discrimination led to crony capitalism, which would ultimately lead to serious consequences for the country.
“Political parties should stand up to eliminate racial differences and the New Economic Policy (NEP). Sadly, we don’t see this in either sides’s manifestos,” the former Petaling Jaya Member of Parliament said.
“It is time for affirmative action to be replaced by need, class, sector and not race.”
The forum, held in conjunction with the United Nation’s International Day for Elimination of Racial Discrimination, was jointly organised by Hindraf, Suaram, United Borneo Front, Lim Lian Geok Cultural Foundation and Human Rights Foundation of Malaysia.
Among the panellists present were Hindraf leader P. Waytha Moorthy, Sarawak Association of Peoples’ Aspiration (Sapa) president Lina Soo and human rights activist Nyam Kee Han.
State Reform Party Sabah (Star Sabah) chief Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan was unable to attend due to “unforeseen consequences”. - http://www.therakyatpost.com/
