Paddy fields inundated with domestic waste water

CAP wants the DID to take urgent action against waste water and solid waste polluting paddy fields and affecting the livelihoods of farmers.
capidrisGEORGE TOWN: The Consumer Association of Penang (CAP) wants urgent action to be taken to resolve the problem of pollution that is damaging paddy fields in certain areas in Sungai Petani, Kedah.
CAP president SM Mohamed Idris urged the Sungai Petani Municipal Council (MPSPK) to take immediate action to stop waste water from housing areas flowing into paddy fields in Kampung Masjid and Kampung Teroi.
In a recent survey, CAP found that the source of pollution came from domestic waste water and solid waste from five nearby housing areas.
“Paddy cultivated in both villages is severely damaged due to the pollution, and affecting the farmers’ income.
“Waste and effluents enter the paddy fields through a nearby ditch, causing soil contamination in this area,” he said a press statement here today.
Idris called on the departments of agriculture, irrigation and drainage (DID) to investigate the matter so as to curtail the pollution from its source, and help the affected farmers whose source of income was threatened.
He wanted the DID and other relevant authorities to build proper and safe irrigation and drainage systems for the farmers to avoid such problems from recurring.
Saying the problem would not have occurred in the first place if development plans and regulations had been adhered to from the very start, Idris added that the current case of pollution was damaging some 23 hectares of paddy fields, reducing rice yields and affecting the livelihoods of at least 10 farmers.
“CAP hopes the relevant parties will compensate the affected farmers to ease their burden,” he said.
