PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu became the highest-ranking opposition leader arrested by the police when he was held after attending a monthly party meeting in Penang early today.
Several other opposition leaders, including PKR vice-presidents Chua Tian Chang and Rafizi Ramli, were arrested in capital city Kuala Lumpur last night ahead of a #KitaLawan rally to protest against their party de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's sodomy conviction and jailing and the imposition of the goods and services tax (GST) from April 1.
Penang PAS deputy commissioner Datuk Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa said Mohamad, better known as Mat Sabu, was detained by about 10 armed and masked policemen as the popular politician arrived at the Seven Star restaurant in Sungai Dua on the mainland at 12.20am.
"He was quickly picked up by the police when he arrived. I believe they are from Bukit Aman... Maybe they had been watching him," Mujahid told The Malaysian Insider in Penang today.
Mujahid said he was not with Mat Sabu, who is also Penang PAS commissioner, when the party leader was picked up but some 20 PAS members had rushed to the police station in Seberang Jaya to find out what was going on.
He said they were not allowed to see Mat Sabu or enter the police station.
"But we managed to hand over some of his meds and clothes, and asked the police to pass them to him," he said while waiting outside the police station.
Mujahid said about 1.30am, Mat Sabu was driven out of the police station with three police cars escorting him.
"I think they are taking him to Bukit Aman. I am not sure what this is about. It could be over the anti-GST rally (#KitaLawan rally) in Kuala Lumpur.
"Maybe the police are looking at those who they think are instigating the people, and taking measures of precaution," he said.
Several Pakatan Rakyat (PR) politicians have been held for their involvement in the #KitaLawan rallies, which had been organised since Anwar's imprisonment last month.
It was reported yesterday the police have started to round up opposition figures ahead of the rally, which is planned to take place this afternoon in Kuala Lumpur.
Yesterday, Rafizi, who is also PKR secretary-general, was arrested at his service centre in Kuala Lumpur under the Sedition Act over a statement he issued calling for full turnout at the #KitaLawan rally.
