THEN WHY ARE SABAHANS STILL POOR? Pairin has done his best
KOTA KINABALU - Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) assistant secretary general, Datuk Herbert T Lagadan, has come out in defence of party president, Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, against former Chief Minister Tan Sri Harris Salleh’s allegations that he (Pairin) has now joined politicians who have been making wild statements against the Federal Government.
Herbert also took Harris to task for asking the Deputy Chief Minister to specify clearly what are the rights of Sabah that have been taken away by the Federal Government.
Herbert, in a statement yesterday, questioned why Harris is asking Pairin to do that.
“Is Harris truly ignorant of Sabah’s rights that had been taken away by the Federal Government to the extent of asking Pairin to specify such rights in a specific manner? Is Harris trying to tell Sabahans that there were no such rights taken away by the Federal government?” the former Kadamaian assemblyman asked.
“Has Pairin and the others been talking nonsense? Did Harris forget how Sabahans dumped BERJAYA as a show of disapproval over his style of leadership? I wish Harris can recall how he unceremoniously dumped Pairin to allow for a by-election in Tambunan as a result of him exercising his role to protect the rights of Sabahans over various issues, including Labuan,” Herbert claimed.
According to Herbert, be it semi-autonomy or delegation of power, all this is long overdue and most welcomed by the people of Sabah.
“Pairin has done his part and to his level best to safeguard Sabah’s rights despite the many constraints and limitations. History has shown that Pairin and his colleagues in the past were willing to go against BN to exercise their role to uphold Sabah rights,” Herbert claimed.
Herbert added that in recent days, Pairin has made known his worries and concern in the hope that the federal government would take note.
Harris, in response to Pairin’s speech during PBS 30th anniversary dinner last week where he called for a common struggle to fight for Sabah’s rights, had asked the latter to specify clearly what are the rights of Sabah that have been taken away by the Federal Government.
This is because the accusation that the Federal Government infringes on Sabah’s rights is a very serious matter, he claimed, adding that it is therefore very important for Sabahans to know the truth behind Pairin’s claim, and if no evidence can be provided, then those leaders making these allegations better retract what they said and keep quiet.

Harris was quoted as saying that, on the surface, Pairin’s call on every Sabahans, irrespective of race or religion, to be united to fight for Sabah’s rights in the Federation of Malaysia looked very pragmatic.
After re-reading Pairin’s statement, however, there is clearly nothing new and he has now joined those politicians who have been making wild statements against the Federal Government from time to time based on nothing, Harris opined.
Harris also took Pairin, who had he said has been a MP as well as State assemblyman for almost 40 years and holding various key positions, including Chief Minister, to task for only claiming now that the rights of Sabah had been taken away by the Federal Government.
“Pairin should have, right from the beginning, protested against any rights under threat of being taken away by the Federal Government and inform Sabahans about them,” he said.
