Pakatan Rakyat federal lawmakers today demanded that the inspector-general of police (IGP) state the standard operating procedure (SOP) in handling public gatherings following the arrests of more than 80 people at an anti-GST rally yesterday.
They also condemned the excessive use of force against the activists, which they claimed violated the spirit of the Federal Constitution.
Describing the police action as "overkill", Wong Chen (PKR-Kelana Jaya) said the SOP was broken at yesterday's protest at the Customs Department in Kelana Jaya.
He said the fact that lawyers were not allowed to bail out the detainees was a sign that constitutional law had been breached.
"Our message is simple – there was excessive use of force. We want the IGP to declare what's the SOP," he said at a press conference at the Parliament lobby.
