WHO STOLE MORE? Despotic Dr M in 22 years or Rosmah-aided Najib in 6?

If there is one thing I “love” about our dear politicians is how they feel the need to give their expert opinions when pointing fingers at others. Now I am not saying that these people should be barred from expressing their opinions, because they do have the right to do so. However, when everyone starts pointing fingers, we tend to lose track of what takes precedence.

Writer Azizan Abdullah made a good point when he pointed out the wrongdoings by Mahathir Mohamed during his premiership – monetary losses amounting to tens of billions of ringgit, ISA, Ops Lallang I & II and plenty more.

However, to compare our government over their current wrongdoings to that of Mahathir’s doesn’t justify anything. A crook is a crook.

After all, two wrongs do not make a right.

Anyone with half a brain would be able to fathom that this is a classic case of the pot calling the kettle black. But the most important question is, what do we do about it?

Do we pick sides? Since Mahathir has been on the throne for a longer period of time and linked to many more scandals, he is perceived as a greater villain. Does this mean the current government’s wrongdoings shall be pardoned or disregarded?

Or do we dismiss the claims by both parties? After all, both fingers pointing out each other are equally tainted. So based on this, do we shut Mahathir out from urging the authorities to uncover the truth behind 1MDB?

The thing is, although Mahathir’s credibility to provoke anyone of wrongdoings is at stake because he himself tak betul, the more important question we should be asking is if this is the right thing to do.

Let us not get tied up with the wrongdoings which took place in the past that we tend to dismiss the wrongdoings taking place under our noses now.

This is not the right time for us to analyse which is blacker between the two – pot or kettle.

We need to keep in mind, if the effort to discredit and muzzle Mahathir continues, who among our Pak Turuts are jantan enough to speak up on 1MDB and other wrongdoings in the government?

Let us ask ourselves – who benefits the most if Mahathir is silenced? Who else in Umno or the government has the guts to demand for financial audit and forensic investigation on 1MDB if not Mahathir?

On one hand, we have Barisan Nasional who have always behaved as The Three Musketeers – All For One, One For All. These people have no qualms of shielding each other of their flaws even when it stinks like rotten corpses. How are we supposed to depend on these buggers to fight for what’s right?

We all saw for ourselves where Barisan Nasional’s priority was when they were more concerned over the party’s image and reputation when accusations on mismanagement of 1MDB finances were made.

On the other hand, we have Tony Pua, Rafizi Ramli and the Opposition who have always tried their best to dig dirt on the government and expose it to the people. But come on, beyond that, what else can they possibly do? They themselves are struggling with internal bleeding in their party.

As hard as it is for me to say it, we cannot deny that we need Mahathir to call out those responsible for 1MDB.

Knowing there is a certain degree of hypocrisy in politics, sometimes the only way to cast out an evil regime is by using evil itself.

Supporting Mahathir’s call to investigate the fraud in our current government doesn’t mean we are sweeping his own wrongdoings under the rug. Instead, let us prioritise things and focus on what is more important for our country – the future or the past.

We have allowed one evil regime to destroy our beloved country once. Let us not repeat the same mistake yet again. - FMT
