ALTANTUYA NOT ENOUGH: Dr M must organize Umno 'coup' or no-confidence vote at Parliament to oust Najib - analysts
KUALA LUMPUR - Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s strong criticism today of current Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak probably stems from the former having his own vision for what he thinks is right for Malaysia, opined an analyst.
Dr Mahathir’s refusal to compromise with that vision, coupled with his “inability to let go”, would probably lead to a continued expression of his grouses of Najib, said Merdeka Centre director Ibrahim Suffian.
“All it does is weaken the PM’s brand and create internal party problems.
“In the current situation where we know the Opposition has its own internal problems, this shows that BN also has its own problems,” Ibrahim told The Rakyat Post.
Ibrahim was asked to comment on Dr Mahathir’s criticism of Najib over several administrative, financial and personal issues.
Weighing in on the matter, Ibrahim noted that although Dr Mahathir had publicly stated his disagreement over Najib’s style of governing, there may be some issues not publicly known.
“Dr Mahathir stated that there were fundamental disagreements with the PM over the leadership style and policy matters, like GST and such.
“The former PM also publicly disagreed with what measures the PM has taken.
“But there might be other issues not publicly known. What is seen by the public eye is sometimes not the whole story; some things are outside the purview of the public.”
When asked whether the continued criticism could lead to Najib stepping down, Ibrahim said the possibility of that happening was “remote”.
“The PM has majority support of Umno and he is the party president.
“For him to step down, Dr Mahathir either has to engineer a way for parliamentarians to agree to a motion of no confidence or organise an internal coup.
“The possibility of something like this is remote.”
To political analyst Dr Zaini Othman, what Dr Mahathir did was nothing new as he had always been vocal in expressing his opinion.
“To me it was not a conflict. Tun Mahathir was just advising.
“He is a senior statesman, so of course he would point out things when he think it is not right.
“Whether you agree with his opinion or not, you have to accept that he is a statesman.
“He (Dr Mahathir) had brought development to our country.
“So after he left the office, when he saw that his successor was not doing a good job in improving the country from what he had set earlier, of course he would be disappointed,” Zaini said when contacted by The Rakyat Post.
The Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) lecturer added that the situation was described as a “conflict” because that is how the politicians want to see it, but actually, Dr Mahathir was only giving his advice on the administration policy of the country.
“This is normal for Tun Mahathir. He had always been critical when he disagrees on something.
“Previously, it was our first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman and then the fifth Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.”
On the possibility of Najib being forced to step down due to the continued criticism from Dr Mahathir, Zaini said “anything is possible in politics”.
“Based on history, when Mahathir criticised Tunku Abdul Rahman and Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, we all know what happened.
“Whoever was in that position had to step down eventually.
“Najib has to take Mahathir’s advice seriously,” Zaini added. - http://www.therakyatpost.com/
