ARE YOU NUTS, ALI RUSTAM! GST akin to 'forced marriage with happy ending'
KUALA LUMPUR - Senator Tan Sri Mohd Ali Rustam has likened the recently implemented Goods and Services Tax (GST) to a “forced marriage”.
In a report by the Barisan Nasional Back Benchers Council’s portal, the former Malacca Chief Minister said despite being perceived as an inconvenience, it would eventually produce positive effects to the public similar to the 160 countries currently implementing the tax system.
“It is like getting our children to get married although they may not want it. So for the first, second or third night, the couple will sleep separately.
“But later on it will be okay. Before the year end the couple may have a child, maybe not just one but up to four later on.
“So that’s why I think the GST is similar to a forced marriage but with a happy ending,” he said while debating the speech made by the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong today.
However, Ali Rustam said the enforcement authorities should triple their efforts to ensure that the GST was a better tax system compared with the previous Sales and Services Tax (SST).
Commenting further, he said the government’s current efforts were in line with the six pre-conditions to ensure the country’s future which was peace, a vibrant economy, more job opportunities, increased salary, lower or zero poverty rate and low to medium inflation rate.
The GST was implemented on April 1 and imposes a 6% charge. The SST imposed a 10% charge.
The government had previously argued that the tax would help increase the nation’s revenue. - Therakyatpost
