Bopim accepts dare to restore cross

Christians should not misread the Biblical advice on “turning the other cheek.”

KOTA KINABALU: Human rights advocate Daniel John Jambun, who heads the UK-based Borneo’s Plight in Malaysia Foundation (Bopim), has accepted the challenge of restoring the cross of the Church in Taman Medan, Petaling Jaya, which “meekly” brought down the sacred symbol of Christianity last Sunday.
Apparently, the Church’s response was in reaction to demands by 50 protesters who interrupted its Sunday service at about 10 am in a threatening and intimidating manner.
“I am not hiding in the UK. I am in Kota Kinabalu most of the time,” said Daniel who was expressing his disappointment with public reaction to his statement on the cross incident. “I can be in Kuala Lumpur in two hours and 20 minutes. I am not put off that my earlier statement has received more brickbats than bouquets.”
Revisiting the restoration of the cross issue, Daniel wants to openly advise the Church to wait for him to restore the cross to its rightful place. “This is a crusade for my faith.”
“A challenge to the Church anywhere, is a challenge to churches everywhere. A challenge to a Christian anywhere, in matters of faith, is a challenge to Christians everywhere.”
Christians for starters, he added, should not misread what Jesus said about turning the other cheek. “The messiah doesn’t expect us to be cowards.”
“The Church wasn’t turning the other cheek when it took down the cross. The Pastor put his tail between his legs and fled.”
He urged the Church and the Pastor to do the right thing as he had pleaded in his statement on Wednesday. “I don’t want to repeat myself.”
Daniel said that he was not put off by “ignorant comments” that Sabah and Sarawak being “electoral fixed deposits of the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN)” was the source of political problems in Malaysia.
“When Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak mentioned fixed deposit, he was referring to the illegal immigrants on the electoral rolls,” said Daniel. “In Sarawak, the fixed deposit is the Pesaka component of the ruling Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) and the colonial divide and rule tactics in Dayak seats. Bring down Pesaka, and you end BN rule in Sarawak.”
In Sabah, he stressed, “the people are demanding that Huguan Siou Joseph Pairin Kitingan take the necessary steps to purge illegal immigrants from the electoral rolls.”
