Don’t give protection money to gangs, contractors told

Doing so would eat into contractor's profits, cause rise in overall costs and delay completion of projects, says home minister.

IPOH: Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has advised contractors not to entertain or bow down to any demand for protection money from secret societies.
He said although the ministry had no statistics on the activity, it was, however, a trend for secret societies to ask for protection money from contractors who wished to carry out a project.
“I hope there is no pressure placed on contractors to pay protection money as it would eat into their profit, thus causing a rise in the overall cost of the project and delayed completion.”
Ahmad Zahid said this to reporters after opening the 38th Annual General Meeting of the Perak Malay Contractors Association, here, yesterday.
He said if the activity continued, it could “kill” the contractors concerned if they could not pay up the protection money demanded by the secret society gangs.
Ahmad Zahid said secret society gangs would commit arson at project sites, threaten contractors with harm or steal building materials at the project sites if their demand for protection money was not met.
“But so far, the activity is not very serious,” he said, adding that secret society gangs even preyed on small contractors.
He said contractors who received threats from gangs should lodge police reports for the cases to be investigated and further action taken.
