Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad blew hot and cold when he met Datuk Seri Najib Razak privately over his criticism of the prime minister's rule, Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Club chief Tan Sri Shahrir Samad revealed today without saying when the meeting had taken place.
Dr Mahathir, Malaysia's longest-serving prime minister until 2003, had launched his harshest-ever attack against Najib last week and told him to quit public office - reminiscent of his criticisms of his successor Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi who resigned in 2009.
“I had asked Najib (about the meeting) and he said Tun Dr Mahathir was hot and cold,” Shahrir told reporters in press conference on the sidelines in Parliament today.
“Dr Mahathir does not know what we do at the grassroots level as he is at the top, while we are at the bottom.
“When people at the top talk, they do not take into account the reality down here. That is why we normally keep quiet. But now we are speaking up,” said Shahrir.
He added that it was time for BN MPs to voice their opinion in light of Dr Mahathir’s increasingly strident criticism of Najib, which Shahrir said is turning personal.
Two days ago, Dr Mahathir said that the ruling BN would lose if the latter were to remain as Prime Minister and Umno president.
“We are not MPs who are blindly supporting Najib. We stand by him because we see the changes that he is bringing and we like it,” Shahrir said.
