HE WHO EATS CHILLI FEELS HOT: Umno man feels GST pinch after paying medical bills
KUALA LUMPUR - Sepanggar Member of Parliament Datuk Jumat Idris is feeling the pinch of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) after having to pay more than a thousand ringgit for his son’s medical needs.
In a Facebook posting, Jumat wrote that he understood the people’s burden over the newly enforced tax as he had to pay GST twice just to seek medical care for his son who is suffering from nerve pain and a crooked spine.
“The consultation cost was subjected to 6% (GST), to pay for the treatment it costs me another 6%. The cost of treatment for his nerve was RM20,000, GST RM1,200. That is not inclusive of other bills. Today I’ve been charged RM5,000.
“This actually burdens the people.”
The status was followed by numerous comments from the general public who took the opportunity to express their grievances and the hardships they have had to go through since the tax was implemented on April 1.
One Facebook user by the name of Katy Hartini wrote : “That’s right Datuk… it really is a burden especially for those like me whose sole breadwinner is the husband. What’s sadder is that my husband is suffering from kidney problems.
He has to go for dialysis every week, I don’t know how much we will have to pay to the hospital later.”
Another user, poultry trader Veronica Saimon questioned what would happen to small businesses that are likely to “close shop” due to GST.
“Food and vitamins are subjected to GST. Transport is subjected to GST. But I’m selling chicken which is not subjected to GST. That means I am bearing the losses. Want it or not, I have to close my business. What about consumer’s necessity?”
Jumat in the comments however explained that the government had never intended to trouble the people, but GST is needed to fund the country’s development.
“The issue here is why the effect of GST is like a domino. During the briefings, it was said that GST is one tax for all.
“Maybe the traders is taking advantage or the system is weak and easily manipulated. I’ve called the Customs and KPDNKK (The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry). They said to make a report and actions will be taken. This is a standard reply.
“Either way I am bringing up this issue in the coming May 18 (Parliamentary) session so that the matter can be ironed out.” - Therakyatpost
