HOW EVIL HEARTED: Pas 'fatwa' on PKR in P Pauh - it's a sin to vote for anti-hudud candidate
PAS Youth is seeing red over a Facebook posting by a Permatang Pauh PAS leader which cautioned Muslims against casting their ballots for candidates who are opposed to hudud.
The posting by the division's ulama affairs chief Badrul Abdul Rahman claimed that voting for such candidates is "haram" (forbidden in Islam) and a "sin".
His comments were prominently reported in the Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia and Sinar Harian Malay dailies.
PAS Youth chief Suhaizan Kaiyat told Malaysiakini that he has requested the Syura Council to take action against Badrul.
"What he (Badrul) said can create problems, so we ask the Syura Council to reprimand him.
"(Badrul) should have referred to the Syura Council and others (before making the statement).
"(They) are more learned about this matter," he added.
Badrul's comment, posted on the Penang PAS Youth Facebook page yesterday, followed Permatang Pauh PAS' urging for PKR to retract its stand not to support Kelantan's hudud enactment.
Failing which, the division said it would not assist the PKR campaign for the May 7 Permatang Pauh by-election, where the electorate is predominantly Malay Muslims.
PAS' top leadership, however, chastised the Permatang Pauh division and ordered it to help PKR's campaign.
The parliamentary seat is the stronghold of former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim. The seat fell vacant following his sodomy conviction and the rejection of his application for pardon.
Umno is now hoping to stage a surprise by capitalising on the rift in Pakatan Rakyat over the hudud issue.
Political observers also noted that a victory in the constituency would reverse Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's precarious position.
Najib has come under tremendous criticism from former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who claims that the prime minister is steering Umno towards defeat in the next polls.
PKR is expected to field its president and Anwar's wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to defend the seat.
Meanwhile, Umno vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has told the people to prepare for a shocker but declined to elaborate. - M'kini
