IT'S ABOUT IGP'S DOUBLE-STANDARDS NOT DR M: Nationwide reports against ex-PM over Altantuya's murder mastermind
Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) members are filing police reports nationwide, calling for an investigation against Dr Mahathir Mohamad under the Sedition Act.
The NGO's coordinator Badrul Hisham Shahrin said the reports concern the former prime minister's remarks regarding Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak on the murder of Altantuya Shaariibuu.
"Yesterday, we filed a report in Rembau and this morning in Kuantan and in Hulu Selangor.
"Later today, reports will be filed in Penang and Malacca," Badrul (right), a suspended PKR member, told Malaysiakini.
He said he had faced action under the Sedition Act for penning a book titled Di Sebalik misteri pembunuhan Altantuya (Behind the Mystery of Altantuya's Murder) on the murder of the Mongolian national.
"So if I had to face action, why not Mahathir for raising this issue?" he asked.
Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar last week said Mahathir did not violate sedition laws as the issues raised have been widely discussed.
The former prime minister also said he did not accuse Najib of committing a crime, but was merely seeking answers as to who ordered the killing.
Is goading public hatred against PM legal?
Among those lodging reports is SAMM Hulu Selangor representative Megat Khairul Anuar Razali who gave police a 10-day ultimatum to call in Mahathir for a statement.
Megat Khairul said Mahathir’s blog entries are "clearly seditious because it incites the public to hate the prime minister".
"If no action is taken in 10 days then we can conclude that it is legal to incite the public to hate the prime minister.
"So police should not harass if anyone prints posters, distributes pamphlets, make banners or hold rallies on the same issues raised by Mahathir," he said.
Section 3(1) of the Sedition Act says bring into hatred or contempt or to excite disaffection against any ruler or against any government, is an act with seditious tendency.
Section 4 of the Act states that anyone who does an act with seditious tendency is guilty of sedition.
The report lodged at the Hulu Selangor police district headquarters also questions the arrest of several opposition leaders under the Sedition Act for making statements similar to Mahathir’s. - M'kini
