MAS SHOCKER: Khazanah can pay one man RM19 MIL a year but not retain 6,000 personnel - union
KUALA LUMPUR - The National Union of Flight Attendants (Nufam) wants the Malaysia Airlines (MAS) management investigated over numerous losses recorded in the past.
Its president, Ismail Nasaruddin, said there were several reports made on the matter but not a single investigation was conducted to date.
“It seems that MAS is clean, but the reality is there are too many losses in MAS thus far.
“Not a single public statement was made regarding the issues and MAS has not explained why they have suffered such immense losses,” he said in a statement today.
Ismail said the government must ensure zero irregularities and corruption in MAS.
He then trained his guns on Khazanah Nasional, which blamed MAS for employing too many personnel, and demanded the latter produce financial proof and reveal the amount of monies paid to board members and executives.
“Now we hear that the new chief executive officer is being paid 5 million euros (RM19.8 million) a year. If this is true, Khazanah Nasional needs to reveal to the people about the RM6 billion allocated to save MAS,” he said.
Ismail also said if the claim was true, MAS had to explain to Nufam how it could afford to pay the sum to one person, but not retain 6,000 of its staff, albeit with a pay cut.
“There are still so many questions that are unanswered and if this continues, we will not see a better future for MAS. It will suffer a worse position and in no time there will be those who blame the staff again.”
Ismail added that MAS’ financial problems were caused by MAS’ top management being paid high salaries and bonuses, as well as leakages, not high salaries paid to workers of lower ranking.
“What we know, at this point of time, is that engineers, stewards and pilots are still being paid the lowest salary in the region.”
Khazanah Nasional Bhd, which owns MAS, plans to cut about 6,000 jobs as part of its restructuring plans to save the national carrier. - Therakyatpost
