Nazri red faced as foreign delegates fall sick after meal

Tourism minister and senior Asean tourism officials come down with possible E-coli poisoning after consuming seafood at a fishing village in Malacca.
Mohamed-Nazri-Aziz_seafood_600MALACCA: Instead of boosting tourism to the historical city of Malacca, Tourism Minister Mohamed Nazri Aziz was left red-faced instead when he and 30 senior Asean tourism officials came down with severe food poisoning after a seafood meal at a fishing village in Umbai.
The minister and the foreign delegates were in Malacca for the 18th senior officials meeting cum 13th Asean socio-cultural community council from March 23 to March 27.
In the state-hosted dinner at the fishing village, Nazri and tourism officials became ill after consuming seafood at the food arcade in the village on March 24.
Chief Minister Idris Haron said a medical team was rushed to the hotel where the delegates were staying when they started complaining of acute stomach ache, abdominal cramps, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever and nausea.
Laboratory tests conducted by the state Health Department showed that the food served could have been contaminated with E. Coli bacteria, The Star Online reported.
“We feel ashamed that our guests had to endure such complications, all because of unhygienic food prepared at the seafood outlets in the area,” he said, adding that the incident had sullied the reputation of the state.
He also said the state government had blacklisted the outlets that had been commissioned to prepare the food and would press for action to be taken against them.
Besides Malaysia, the meeting was attended by delegates from Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
