Police put an end to gang called ’36 Melayu’

'Pak Su', the ringleader for the gang's smuggling activities, was arrested in Thailand where he was in hiding.
gari_polis_600ALOR SETAR: Police have crippled a triad organisation called “36 Melayu” under Ops Black 4 with the arrest of a man suspected of being the ringleader in Changloon last Saturday.
Kedah police chief Zamri Yahya said the suspect known as ‘Pak Su’, 32, had been hiding in Thailand to avoid being caught by police. “Ops Black 4 is an operation to curb smuggling activities controlled by the ’36 Melayu” group,” he told a press conference, here yesterday.
Under the Ops Black 4 conducted by Bukit Aman’s D7 department from September 18 last year, four members of the group aged between 24 to 33 were arrested and charged under the Prevention of Crime Act (POCA) 1959.
Zamri said the secret society, that has been active for eight years, had caused huge tax losses to the government from smuggling items like liquor, rice, tobacco and fireworks.
In a separate case, police busted a human trafficking syndicate that was raking in millions via Ops Pintas Utara which started on February 14. The operation was conducted together with the Special Task Force for Anti-vice, Gaming and Gangsterism (Stagg), the Kedah police contingent headquarters and the Penang police contingent headquarters.
Zamri said since the operation was launched, 42 raids were launched and seven investigation papers opened. All the cases were investigated under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 (ATIPSOM).
A total of 37 arrests were made and 57 victims aged between 15 to 50 were rescued.
Zamri said the modus operandi of the syndicate was to charge each Myanmar between RM8,000 to RM10,000 to enter Malaysia with payment being made in Myanmar.
“Once they were smuggled into Thailand, the syndicate will force them to make extra payments to enter Malaysia and if they failed to pay, they will either be beaten, not given food or subject to other forms of torture.
“This syndicate’s role is to bring in people from Bangladesh and Myanmar either by road or sea, as well as bring these migrants to Christmas Island in Australia,” he said.
