UMNO WILL 'BUNGKUS' if you dissolve Parliament now - Ibrahim Ali warns Najib
Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) will pay a heavy price if the party agrees with Pulai MP Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed's view that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak should dissolve the Parliament to pave the way for a snap election.
Perkasa president Datuk Ibrahim Ali, in issuing the warning to Umno members today, said that a snap election would only bring defeat to BN and Umno due to the many ongoing and unresolved issues faced by the people.
"It is not wrong for Najib to dissolve the Dewan Rakyat. But in my opinion, if such a move is taken right now, Umno will be 'bungkus' (finished) and BN will 'jalan' (come to an end)," he told The Malaysian Insider.
"With lingering issues such as questions from Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad that included 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) debts, the murder of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu and the goods and servies tax, Umno and BN might as well hand over their power to Pakatan Rakyat.
"They (Putrajaya) need to concentrate on mending the situation first," he said.
Nur Jazlan on Wednesday said Najib should come clean on the negative perception of himself, his family and Putrajaya by calling for a snap election.
He said Najib should also answer allegations raised by Dr Mahathir, adding that the prime minister's failure to do so would be detrimental to the party.
Ibrahim also said Nur Jazlan’s motive for raising the subject was questionable.
"I am not sure what he is up to. I am doubtful though. Does he have a solution at hand or he just wants to see BN's demise?" Ibrahim said.
He said politics could be likened to health because both require scrutiny before any decision could be made.
He said a snap election was not the best solution as there were still many issues that the government needed to handle and resolve.
"Using the health analogy, once he sees that the ruling party is in trouble, Nur Jazlan immediately calls for a major operation. Now, with an operation... one can either survive it, or not.
"To me, being sick means there is still time. We can still get treatment, undergo minor surgery, take the right medication, etc.," he said.
"Who knows, maybe we can get well and don't really need to go through the major surgery after all," he added.
In another development, Ibrahim rebuked PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang for calling Umno as hypocrites over the issue surrounding the party's support of Hadi's private member's bill in Parliament.
Ibrahim said as an ulama (scholar), Hadi should have been more careful with his words and tactful if he wanted Umno to support the hudud bill.
"He wants Umno's support, but by making such statement, he will just anger more people,"
"Hadi should not have said such a thing. The statement could be misinterpreted, equalising Umno with hypocrisy. It is not very nice. If you want people to support you, don't question them.
"I was called 'gedebe' (loose cannon) but I never said such a thing. But this turban-wearing, scholar-looking man who don't even appear 'gedebe' had uttered such word," he said.
It was reported that Hadi had said that PAS was taking a huge risk in putting their trust in Umno, which he described “hypocrites”, to support the hudud bill.
However, Hadi said he preferred to think well of Umno in the hope that the party would change its ways.
"Umno said they support hudud . In Islam we are taught to accept the promise of anyone, even from those known to be hypocrites.
"Hopefully, this way... even the hypocrites will repent," Hadi had said at a forum on Wednesday.
On March 19, the Kelantan state legislative assembly unanimously passed the Shariah Criminal Code II Enactment 1993 (Amendment 2015).
Hadi sent a notice on March 18 to table a private member's bill in Parliament on the hudud enactment.
The notice would allow him to table the bill to amend the Shariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965, or what is known as Act 355, paving the way for the implementation of hudud in Kelantan.
PAS's allies in Pakatan Rakyat, DAP and PKR, said they would not support the bill in Parliament.
The party reportedly said it only needs a simple majority, or 112 MPs, to vote in the Dewan Rakyat to amend the Shariah Courts (Criminal) Jurisdiction Act. – TMI
