You’re not welcome, café tells Tanjong MP

DAP’s Ng Wei Aik had refused to pay 10% service charge
DAP
GEORGE TOWN: The Tanjong MP will no longer be welcome at a café here over his refusal to pay a 10% service charge.
Ng had held a press conference at the café on Burmah Road last Saturday and the bill for the drinks served to the reporters included a RM7 service charge. However, Ng refused to pay the service charge.
There has been an uproar over the 10% service charge following the introduction of the 6% Goods and Services Tax (GST).
The government has since ruled that until a firm policy is decided on the issue, restaurants and other eating establishments can include the service charge provided they have a collective agreement with the workers’ union, and that the money collected is strictly for the workers.
The café issued a new bill without the service charge to Ng who then told another patron that she, too, had the right to accept or refuse to pay the service charge.
The patron told the supervisor that she too would not be paying the service charge.
