Zaid aims razor tweets at Jakim’s proposed concert rules

The former law minster shows Jakim the sharp side of his formidable Twitter skills.

PETALING JAYA: “Rules are fair or not fair period,” tweeted Zaid Ibrahim pointedly yesterday.
Referring to new guidelines for concerts proposed by the Department for Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim), the former law minister lashed out at the agency.
“Jakim guidelines unfair to non Muslims? Can u stop this nonsense about Muslim / non Muslim dichotomy.”
The light-heartedness of his earlier tweets about wives and wealth was glaringly absent.
The proposed updates to the rules are to apply to foreign artistes. Among them are strict limitations on dressing, behaviour and performances.
Perhaps the most controversial change is a move to segregate the audience by gender.
The Malaysian public has expressed mixed feelings about this, though their opinions do not seem to follow ethnic or religious lines.
zaid-twitter-JakimSome Muslims have openly stated the rules would be patently unfair, especially to non-Muslims who rarely have occasion to separate attendees by gender.
“Stop pandering to your own community,” went another one of Zaid’s tweets. “We need speak with one voice. Just because they want us divided does not mean we must play ball.”
The new guidelines are highly likely to have an impact on the number and quality of performers who come here. This in turn will affect the revenue of concert organisers and entertainment companies.
Zain’s stinging clutch of tweets was topped off with “If u are unable to feel the unfairness of the rules for others, then your complaints are equally undeserving for (sic) consideration.”
