Police have received 65 reports on election misconduct in regard to the Permatang Pauh parliamentary by-election and have opened five investigation papers (IP) since nomination day on April 25.
Penang police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said that three of the IPs were for campaigning without a permit.
"One IP was for damaging campaign paraphernalia and another, for theft of a loudspeaker at the Barisan Nasional (BN) operations room at Kubang Semang.
"The loudspeaker worth about RM700 was reported missing on Friday night by workers manning the operations room.
"The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code," he said after visiting the early voting centre at Dewan Gemilang, Seberang Prai Tengah police headquarters today.
Early voters comprising 627 police personnel and their spouses cast their votes from 8am today at Dewan Gemilang and Berek Kelamin, Balai Polis Kubang Semang.
Rahim said that as of yesterday, 405 permits had been issued to the contesting parties.
"Based on police observation, only 163 ceramah had been given so far; everything is going on smoothly without any unfavourable incident," he said.
He also assured voters that traffic would be smooth and security tight, on polling day on May 7.
Four candidates, Suhaimi Sabudin (BN), Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail (PKR), Azman Shah Othman (Parti Rakyat Malaysia) and Salleh Isahak (Independent) are vying for the parliamentary seat.
The by-election was called after the disqualification of its representative Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who was convicted for sodomy.
He is currently serving five years at the Sungai Buloh prison.
