BITTER TASTE OF PERAK CRISIS UNFORGOTTEN: Sultan Nazrin’s installation ceremony begins

BITTER TASTE OF PERAK CRISIS UNFORGOTTEN: Sultan Nazrin’s installation ceremony begins
IPOH - The various programmes taking place in conjunction with the enthronement of Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Azlan Shah as the 35th Sultan of Perak will stretch over 15 days from today until May 17.
The first event is the ‘Istiadat Meletak Kerja’ on the palace grounds of Istana Iskandariah in Kuala Kangsar which includes the beatings of the ‘nobat’ (royal musical instrument) followed by a 17-cannon salutation.
Steeped in royal tradition, experts claim the ‘nobat’ is only performed on certain occasions such as enthronements and to mark the beginning of royal ceremonies.
In accordance with Sultan Nazrin’s wish, the coronation will be carried out without any extravagance and will focus on preserving and rejuvenating the tradition of the institution.
A special thanksgiving and prayer ceremony will be held at the Ubuddiah mosque in Kuala Kangsar at 6.45pm.
The special prayers will also be held in all mosques and prayer rooms, public and private tertiary education institutions and boarding schools throughout Perak.
On the second day, the Sultan and his consort, Raja Permaisuri Tuanku Zara Salim, are scheduled to visit an exhibition displaying their photographs at the Ipoh town hall at 10am before gracing the finals of a debate competition at the Casuarina@Meru hotel at night.
The next morning, the Sultan will attend a meeting of the Pardons board at the palace — the only event of the day.
All eyes will be on Kuala Kangsar on Wednesday — the day of the installation — which will begin with Sultan Nazrin Shah inspecting a Guard of Honour on the palace grounds before the ceremony adjourns to the Balairong Seri.
It is here that the historic installation of Sultan Nazrin Shah as Perak’s 35th Sultan will take place, an event which will be marked with a 21-cannon salutation.
The royal town of Kuala Kangsar is decorated gaily with lights to commemorate the enthronement of Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah.
The Sultan will perform a number of traditional ceremonies the following day, including the ‘Istiadat Bersiram Tabal’, a ‘cleansing bath’ performed on a ceremonial dais known as the ‘Panca Persada’.
The water used during the ceremony is from seven tributaries of the Perak River.
Later that night, the Sultan will perform the ‘bath’ along with other traditional ceremonies, including the ‘Istiadat Tabal Pusaka’ (traditional investiture).
The sixth day will mark the beginning of the Sultan’s visits to the graves of 30 previous Sultans in Perak.
This will take six days as the graves are located in numerous areas throughout Kuala Kangsar, Bota, Parit, and Kampung Gajah.
This includes visits to the grave of the state’s first ruler Sultan Mudzaffar Shah I in Lambor Kanan on May 12, and the grave of the previous Sultan, Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah in the Bukit Chandan Royal Mausoleum on May 10.
Sultan Azlan Shah, the 34th Sultan of Perak, is Sultan Nazrin Shah’s late father.
He passed away on May 28, 2014.
Although there are 34 Sultans of Perak, four Sultans are buried outside the state.
An official installation dinner will be held at the palace on May 9.
After the ceremonial visits to the graves are concluded, the Sultan will proceed to visit the Beting Beras Basah in Bagan Datoh the 12th day of the ceremonies while his consort visits a home for special children in Hutan Melintang.
On May 16, the Sultan and his consort will attend the Installation Run and Tatoo Show at Stadium Perak before ending of the installation ceremonies with the ‘Majlis Menutup Kerja’ event the following day. - Malay Mail
