KUALA LUMPUR - A house fire believed to have been caused by a burning cigarette resulted in the death of Datuk Dr Muhammad Ali Mahfuz Ali, said to be a close friend of former Premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
The incident which took place in Taman Tun Dr Ismail here at around 1.30am today was believed to have started from a cigarette smoked by the 88-year-old victim, who according to his son, had grown increasingly forgetful recently.
Brickfields police chief ACP Muhammad Azlee Abdullah said police patrol around the area noticed the fire and immediately made their way in by cutting the lock on the house’s front door.
“Unfortunately by the time they got in, the officers realised the house’s living room was already on fire and the victim who was in there, badly burnt.
“They then noticed the victim’s 77-year-old wife standing at the corner of the house’s main door and immediately got her out,” he told The Rakyat Post when contacted.
He said that investigations showed no sign of foul play as all doors and windows in the house were in good condition and hadn’t been tampered with.
“His son told us that the victim was a smoker and we believe he might have been smoking in the area which is also the place he slept in every night.
“Ours and the Fire and Rescue Department’s forensic teams both were in consensus on the possibility that the fire was started from his cigarette.”
Muhammad Ali’s remains have been taken to University Malaya Medical Centre where his post-mortem will be conducted today.
His widow was admitted to the Emergency Unit of the same hospital for further treatment.
“We have informed the unfortunate incident to Tun Dr Mahathir, as was requested by the victim’s family,” added Azlee. - Therakyatpost
