Dr M, GST major factors for PKR’s Permatang Pauh win, survey shows

The goods and services tax (GST)as well as Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s criticism against the Barisan Nasional (BN) administration boosted support for Pakatan Rakyat in the May 7 Permatang Pauh by-election, a survey showed.
According to a survey by think tank Institut Darul Ehsan (IDE) on May 3, 63% of the 1,075 Permatang Pauh voters polled said Dr Mahathir’s attacks against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak influenced them to support Pakatan Rakyat candidate Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
When asked if GST would push them to support PR, 73% said ‘yes’, the survey showed.
“Pakatan Rakyat was able to convince voters about the GST, their strategy was great. They used posters emphasising the rising cost of living, and the ‘luxurious lifestyle’ of some people,” said Professor Datuk Dr Mohammad Redzuan Othman, the deputy chairman of IDE, when presenting the survey results in Shah Alam today.
Redzuan said Dr Mahathir’s calls for Najib to step down also had a huge impact on fence sitters in particular.
“When you have the opposition criticising the prime minister, people say that’s normal, it’s their job to criticise the prime minister. But things are different when it’s Dr Mahathir who is doing the criticising,” said Redzuan.
“So it definitely had an impact on the voters, especially fence-sitters.”
He noted with amusement that posters of the former prime minister figured prominently during the campaign, while Najib’s image could only be seen on PR’s posters attacking him.
However, Dr Redzuan said that from his personal observation, the imprisonment of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was the biggest factor for PR’s win, followed by the GST and Dr Mahathir.
“Anwar has always been the number one issue, and it’s been that way for years,” said Redzuan.
“Before the campaigning began, people were already tired of the issue, but PKR re-ignited it by distributing booklets on Anwar, and hanging up posters of him.”
The May 3 survey found that people who wanted to vote for Dr Wan Azizah largely did so out of sympathy for her family.
It also revealed that BN’s strategies such as Bantuan Rakyat 1 Malaysia (BR1M) cash vouchers, hudud and the emphasis on the Penang state government’s weaknesses had little impact on voters there.
Only 17% of voters said they were swayed by BR1M to vote BN, 30% said the same about hudud, and just 24% wanted to vote for BN because they were unhappy with the DAP-led state government.
Dr Wan Azizah was announced winner of the Permatang Pauh by-election on May 11, sealing her return to the parliamentary seat for the fourth time.
She garnered 30,316 votes, a majority of 8,841 ballots ahead of Barisan Nasional newcomer Suhaimi Sabudin, who got 21,475 votes.
Independent candidate Salleh Ishak won 367 votes and Parti Rakyat Malaysia candidate Azman Shah 101 votes. There were 843 spoilt votes.
A total of 71,890 people were eligible to vote in the parliamentary seat, but voter turnout was 53,198 or 74%, according to the Election Commission.
The seat has never been won by the BN ruling coalition since 1999, after it sacked Dr Wan Azizah's husband, Anwar from his position as deputy prime minister in 1998.
Anwar had been MP of the constituency for four terms from 1982 to 1998.
After his conviction and jailing for sodomy and corruption, Dr Wan Azizah held the fort for him for three terms until his return to politics in August 2008. She also led PKR during this time and remains its president.
Anwar won the seat again in the 2013 polls but was disqualified as MP in February this year after the Federal Court upheld a second sodomy conviction, which the opposition has claimed was a political conspiracy to end his career.
Dr Wan Azizah was always the heavyweight in the campaign to retain the seat.
