Former aide said to be involved in helping to settle assemblyman's bankruptcy problem

SEREMBAN: With a possible by-election looming in the background, a prime ministerial aide is reportedly involved in seeking a settlement of a bankruptcy suit against a Negeri Sembilan state assemblyman.
Ishak Ismail, the member for Lenggeng, was declared a bankrupt in March because of a loan from businessman Misran Sukadi. A former aide to Najib Razak has been asked to help arrange an out-of-court settlement, Malaysiakini reported.
The report quoted an unnamed spokesman for the Prime Minister’s office as saying that Shahlan Ismail had been told to talk to both of them to resolve the problem.
Shahlan, who is director of strategic planning for the PM’s Office, is believed to have written to Ishak, an Umno veteran, that he had been ordered “to have you to settle this out-of-court immediately”.Ishak is believed to have filed an appeal against the bankruptcy order. He is said to have stood guarantee for a contractor who then defaulted on a RM2mil loan from the businessman.
Should Ishak’s appeal fail and his bankruptcy hold, he will be disqualified from his state assembly seat, and a by-election would be called. Fresh from a by-election loss in Permatang Pauh and a reduced majority in Rompin this month, Umno and Barisan Nasional would be reluctant to face another test while Najib’s leadership comes under attack from former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
