Padang Besar mayor arrested in human trafficking case

Police rescue 55 human trafficking victims and have found 33 bodies to date.
Banjong Pongphon.
SONGKHLA: Thai authorities are cracking down on those suspected of being involved in human trafficking in southern Thailand, including Padang Besar Mayor Banjong Pongphon.
Ninth Division deputy police chief Pol Maj Gen Puttichat Akhachan said Banjong and two police officers were questioned at the division’s operation centre in Hat Yai.
Twenty-nine warrants of arrest were issued after cases of human trafficking were exposed following the discovery of the remains of foreigners about 300 metres from the Malaysian-Thai border.
He said police had rescued 55 human trafficking victims, 24 Rohingyas, 15 Bangladeshis and 16 individuals of unknown nationalities.
Authorities have also found 33 bodies to date but have not dug into an old grave believed to be the burial ground of 30 Rohingyas who died while trying to cross into Malaysia.
Digging will resume after authorities hold discussions with the office of Sheikh ul Islam. In the meantime a ban has been imposed on entry into the area.
Today, 60 Rohingyas and Bangladeshis were found famished at Khao Kaew Hill, an area bordering the districts of Hat Yai and Rattapoom.
They are now being sheltered at the Ban Klong school compound.
In the past two days, 95 people had been found and investigations by the authorities showed the foreigners took a boat from Myanmar and arrived in Satun province.
Later, they walked to a hilly area and continued their journey to gain entry into Malaysia but were left behind by the middlemen as authorities found more graves at Khao Rup Chang Hill in Padang Besar.
