Commuters in the Klang Valley will soon be able to travel on RapidKL's double-decker buses that are expected to hit the streets in September.
Prasarana Malaysia Bhd will be rolling out 40 double-decker buses to increase ridership and further improve the public transport system in the Klang Valley.
Prasarana group managing director Azmi Abdul Aziz said the company was in the midst of finalising the routes for the buses.
“We are studying suitable routes and we are looking at high-volume areas.
“When we are nearing the launch date, then we will announce the routes,” he said after the launching ceremony at the RapidKL depot in Balakong, Selangor, recently.
Azmi also said that there would be no change in the fare rates for all the routes.
“The fare is regulated and the double-decker buses can lower the operating cost, because it can ferry more people. A single-deck bus can carry up to 70 passengers, but the double-decker can take up to 108 passengers,” he said.
Azmi also said that they will also be adding an additional 80 single-deck buses to their fleet of 1,300 buses.
The buses were unveiled by Pemandu chief executive officer Datuk Seri Idris Jala and Prasarana Malaysia Bhd group chairman Tan Sri Ismail Adam.
Prasarana will also be launching Rapid Point, which is a mobile bus stop that can be transferred to any location.
Azmi said that Rapid Point is a new innovation that was created for the convenience of commuters who are using public transport.
“Commuters are able to wait for the bus in a different environment. The bus stop is equipped with air-condition, WiFi, cafe and toilet,” he said.
Azmi said Prasarana would start rolling out 20 of the Rapid Point buses around the KL city centre.
“We are working with Kuala Lumpur City Hall to identify suitable locations for the buses," he said.
