THICK-SKINNED OR DESPERATE? Najib REAFFIRMS HIMSELF as Umno president

KUALA LUMPUR - Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today reaffirmed his legitimacy as Umno president and the first leader to be picked through a revamped party electoral system.
He said the expanded voting base, which did away with representative votes by some 2,600 delegates, had given more than 147,000 members to select leaders of their choice without having to go through nomination rounds.
Najib and his deputy, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin won uncontested for the top two party posts in 2013.
Commenting on Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's call for him to step down as party president and prime minister, Najib said the old system was rigid and in a tongue-in-cheek manner, added that was how the former has stayed in office for 22 years.
"And that is how Dr Mahathir became prime minister and Umno president for 22 years. I too, can breach the 20 year mark if I choose to remain with the old system.
"Furthermore, if you wanted to be president before, you need to score 60 nominations. Of course, that is quite a demand," said Najib, in his speech before the cheer of Umno veteran members during a gathering at the party headquarters.
Najib said as a leader, he was committed to ensure the country's path to be a developed nation by 2020. Correlating the mission to Dr Mahathir's criticisms against the administration, Najib said he did not reject all past measures and objectives.
"We only have five years before 2020.
And that was the target set by Mahathir. I did not reject that, because I agree it is a good, and achievable target. "But of course at the same time, I have to scrap some of the previous objectives (and projects) that do not benefit the people."
On Dr Mahathir's contention against 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M), Najib reiterated the country's wealth must be shared by all.
"Development is not just about huge projects. What about those who are poor or from the lower income group? BR1M is measure which gives money back to the people. "BR1M is also serving its purpose to help the needy. And many of them are our party members who live in the kampung.
We need to help them. Not all of our staunchest supporters are rich." Also present at the gathering was Umno Veteran chairman Tan Sri Tajol Rosli Ghazali and party secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor. - NST
