KUALA LUMPUR: Ufun Group Bhd Ltd, in a statement on Thursday, said that it has instructed its lawyers to help identify those spreading rumours in the Thai media that it has a connection with Mohd Nazifuddin Najib, the second son of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
The company was denying any links with Nazifuddin. Ufun, a Thai multi-level marketing firm, sells Utoken, a digital currency used to purchase items and services online.
Ufun believes the rumours of the purported link were being spread by mischievous people. “They are feeding false information to cause confusion.”
Citing UFunStore Co Ltd as an example, the company said it has never claimed any link with Nazifuddin.
“We will take the necessary action against unwarranted attacks against the company.”
“Irresponsible and false rumours cause uneasiness and embarrassment to the parties concerned.”
Nazifuddin, in an earlier statement, said that he alerted police, Bank Negara Malaysia and the Thai embassy in Kuala Lumpur that he has no links with a Ponzi scheme allegedly run by Ufun Group Bhd Ltd in Thailand.
However, Nazifuddin admitted that he was a director and chairperson of Sagajuta (Sabah) Sdn Bhd, apparently linked with Ufun, until May 31, 2012.
He was referring to a video which had gone viral in Malaysia. “There was no concrete evidence in the video that suggests my involvement with Ufun and their schemes,” he said. “I will not be hampered by these malicious attempts to defame and character assassinate me.”
Nazifuddin said in the statement that Ufun used his name as far back as two years ago to “deceive” members of the public into signing up with them. “I have no involvement with the group.”
He denied knowing three individuals from Malaysia — Tay Kim Leng, Lee Kuan Ming and Wong Ching Hua – who have arrest warrants pending against them in Thailand. “I have never met nor spoken to these individuals before. Several arrests have already been made and the crackdown on the alleged scheme is currently ongoing.”
“Both Thai and Malaysian police will cooperate in their investigations to detain the perpetrators and those involved in this scheme.”
