Umno would have been WIPED OUT if Tabung Haji-1MDB deal exposed sooner - Guan Eng
KUALA LUMPUR - Umno would have lost more support in the Permatang Pauh by-election if Lembaga Tabung Haji’s (LTH) controversial land purchase from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) was revealed earlier, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said today.
The DAP secretary-general also noted that BN’s failure to wrest the parliamentary seat from PKR showed voters’ concern of the cost of living and economic issues such as the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and the debt-laden 1MDB.
“If the latest expose of Lembaga Tabung Haji buying land from 1MDB had broken out a few days before polling day, Umno would have lost by a bigger margin than the 2013 general elections,” said Lim in a statement.
“The people were also fed-up of BN’s politics of fear in using the divisive nature of race and religion as well as threats and lies to intimidate the voters to support BN.
Such dirty tactics, effective they may have been in the past, no longer worked on educated and sophisticated voters in Permatang Pauh,” he added.
He pointed out that BN’s votes in yesterday’s by-election only increased by 0.38 per cent and noted that PKR’s reduced votes of around 3,000 was due to the 15 per cent drop in voter turnout.
An anonymous blog called “The Benchmark” on Wednesday published purported copies of the agreement to the purported sale of two parcels of 1MDB land in the Tun Razak Exchange project to LTH for RM772 million.

Quoting sources with direct knowledge on the matter, Reuters yesterday reported that the debt-laden state investment arm was set to sell two plots of land from the Tun Razak Exchange project to the pilgrimage fund for about RM700 million.
LTH, however, refuted reports that it had bought two plots of land from 1MDB, saying that a purchase was made only for one plot at a discount rate of RM188.5 million.
In a statement, LTH chief executive officer Datuk Johan Abdullah said that the investment was in line with LTH’s strategic plan to focus on property development.
DAP’s Bukit Bendera MP Zairil Khir Johari, however, pointed out that the purchase was still exorbitant as the pilgrimage fund had bought it at RM2,773 per sq ft, 43 times higher than the RM64 per sq ft price 1MDB had paid in 2011. - Malay Mail
