We should be thankful Dr M is speaking up for us

Love him or not, only former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has the stature to discuss national issues with bluntness and clarity.

Mahathir

Do we seriously think at his age and with his stature, Tun Dr Mahathir has a personal, hidden agenda when he speaks up?
Do we seriously think that he is afraid to go to jail as some would say? That he is promoting his children to occupy the Number One seat in government?
That he cares even two hoots about his legacy and the interests of his cronies at this juncture of his life?
I think we Malaysians have become too disillusioned with our government leaders, both past and present. Hence, any criticism, no matter from whom and in whatever the context, is treated with sarcasm and cynicism.
Worse, we regularly view those criticisms as having an embedded political agenda, with no real value to them.
I think many of us are wrong.
It is time to put politics and personality aside and focus our efforts at issues.
Otherwise this country will be in a very precarious position.
I write for selfish reasons:
  • I want the good standard of living in this country to be preserved for all of us.
  • I want the less fortunate and the poorer of our countrymen to be given the opportunity to progress with the rest.
  • I want the government to do more and waste less.
  • I believe this is not too much to ask.
Has it ever occurred to us that Malaysia now needs a 90-year-old person to speak on her behalf, despite our so-called “democratic tradition” since Independence?
The Opposition has spoken, but it has had minimal effect thus far. In fact, 52% of Malaysians have spoken too, but it has fallen on deaf ears.
Now, many issues are deemed seditious and therefore out of bounds.
We are in a situation where any additional resource is a plus. Indeed, we must be thankful that Tun Dr Mahathir is still able to highlight the many pertinent issues which most of us only dare mumble about among ourselves for fear of harassment.
Tun Dr Mahathir has the stature to speak about institutions and issues that are deemed sacred and beyond criticism.
So be thankful — whatever our personal feelings about our former, formidable premier.
