Umno has demanded its members who participated in a protest against a church to provide a written explanation for their action and reminded them that Malaysia is a multiracial nation.
According to party secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, "less than five" Umno members were involved in the April 19 protest in Taman Medan.
He told Malaysiakini that the party headquarters had issued the letters, which are similar to a show-cause letters.
"We wrote to them, stating ,'please, whatever you're going to do, remember this is a multiracial country'. We also told them that Umno does not profess to and condone such things," he said.
Among those who received the letters were Abdullah Abu Bakar, the brother of inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar, as well as former Petaling Jaya Selatan Umno Wanita chief Munaliza Hamzah.
The police have since cleared Abdullah, who is also the Taman Lindungan Jaya Umno branch leader, on the grounds that he was present to mediate between the protesters and church officials.
Meanwhile, Tengku Adnan said the Umno members were also reminded that Malaysians look up to Umno as the party which leads the nation.
He added that their replies would be referred to the party disciplinary board.
"If there's a disciplinary element, then the board will proceed with action," he said.
Some 50 protesters gathered outside a church in Taman Medan, demanding that its cross be removed from a high vantage point as it was considered disturbing to Muslims.
The police have completed their investigation into the case under the Peaceful Assembly Act and Penal Code. - M'kini
