Bridge washed away in Janda Baik flash floods

Houses and recreational areas affected as three rivers burst their banks after five hours of rain.

KUANTAN: Heavy rain early today triggered flash floods in Janda Baik and washed away a bridge to private property as well as a water main, cutting piped water supply to several village homes.

Several houses and nine recreational areas in the area were flooded after three rivers burst their banks following almost five hours of incessant rain.

Janda Baik Youth acting chairman Mohd Azman Abu Naim, 34, said the rain, which started at about 5 am, caused the water level of the Cheringin, Lampin and Kuali rivers to rise suddenly.

The flood waters affected the recreational areas near the rivers and also several village houses.

“A bridge to a private property collapsed due to the swift current and several village homes lost piped water supply after a water main was washed away,” he said.

Chalet operator Mohd Ridzwan Mohd Arif, 30, said he had to relocate a family on holiday to a relative’s house on a hill after their chalet was flooded.

“The car of our guest was slightly damaged. A fish pond in the area was flooded and all the fish swam away,” he said.

Mohd Ridzwan said this was first time his chalet had been flooded in the three years he had been operating it.
