BUT GANI CAN INFLUENCE HOW REPORT IS WRITTEN: AG not involved in probe work, 1MDB taskforce says after calls for withdrawal
KUALA LUMPUR - Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail is not involved in the investigation work on 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and merely gives legal advice in his capacity as the top government lawyer, the special taskforce on the state-owned fund said today.
The 1MDB taskforce said getting legal advice in the 1MDB case involving corruption allegations against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was in line with general practices undertaken by other enforcement agencies.
“The issue of Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail, in his capacity as the government’s legal counsel, intervening and influencing investigation work does not arise,” the taskforce comprising Bank Negara governor Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed said in a joint statement.
“Instead, as Attorney-General, Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail is only consulted to get legal guidance and advice to ensure that the investigation is done lawfully and holistically... Providing legal guidance and advice such as in the case of 1MDB is the same and in line with general practices in all other investigation cases,” the taskforce added.
News portal The Malaysian Insider reported today former AG Tan Sri Abdul Talib Othman as saying that Abdul Gani should remove himself from the task force investigating 1MDB to boost public confidence in the probe.
The task force is probing allegations raised in a recent Wall Street Journal article that US$700 million (RM2.6 billion) from 1MDB was channelled to Najib’s personal bank accounts.
Talib was quoted saying that there must be check and balance between investigation agencies and the public prosecutor. - Malay Mail
