KUALA LUMPUR - DAP’s Ramkarpal Singh Deo today urged the Attorney-General (A-G) to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the allegation that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak received funds from 1 Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
The Bukit Gelugor MP said there must also be no political interference in the probe given the gravity of the claim published by Wall Street Journal (WSJ) last week.
“I urge the A-G to act without fear or favour forthwith and with full transparency in investigating these matters collectively as, there can be no doubt, the said matters have raised questions which demand immediate answers,” he said outside the Dang Wangi police station here.
Ramkarpal was accompanying fellow DAP MP, Lim Lip Eng, to lodge a police report over the allegations.
He further said that the A-G must not hold back on prosecutions if the allegations are found to be true, citing criminal breach of trust and corruption as possible charges.
Ramkarpal added, however, that legal action such as defamation lawsuits must be taken if the reports are proven to be false.
In a report on Friday, the WSJ, citing documents from Malaysian investigators currently scrutinising the troubled 1MDB’s financials, claimed that the money trail shows that some US$700 million (RM2.6 billion) were moved between government agencies, banks and companies before it ended up in Najib’s accounts.
Yesterday, an aide said the prime minister will take legal action against the WSJ tomorrow. - Malay Mail
